During the late 1800's the small settlement of Federal Way started out as a logging community. However, the Federal Highway 99 was completed during the 1920's, which offered as name for the small community and also linked it to the economic centers of Tacoma and Seattle. In 1929, the name of Federal Way was first used when the construction was planned for the Federal Way High School along Federal Highway 99 and five schools that existed at that time consolidated their operations into School District # 210.
The community of Federal Way boasted a ten block commercial that featured a family oriented theme park, a shopping center, as well as many different areas for housing during the late 1950's. Between the 1970's and the 1980's, there were considerable changes in the community as the result of the rapid growth of residential areas and retail outlets. The residents of Federal Way collaborated to form what was then known as the 6th largest community in Washington State because they wanted identity for the community, and quality growth that was controlled. The year 1990 saw the incorporation of Federal Way. The residents of Federal Way also elected to a mayor/council form of government from a council/manager form of government in 2010.
These days, Federal Way is a commercial and residential community that has a population that is employed in neighboring communities including Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, and Sea Tac as well as being employed locally. The community has enhanced the quality of life for its residents with high quality parks, many different opportunities for recreation, and improvements in the infrastructure as well as fostering quality residential and commercial growth during the years since the community incorporated. The Comprehensive Plan of the community is focusing on the future of Federal Way and includes plans to access public transportation, mixed use residential and commercial development in the business area downtown as well as for a vibrant Community Center.
